We've all been there. That time of the day between lunch and end of the work day when it feels like you’ve hit a wall. Your tired, dragging and a mid-day brain fog is settling in. You’ve got less energy and start thinking about hitting the vending machine for quick snack to perk you up.
But instead of reaching for a sugary, processed snack to boost your mood and energy, think about making a few small changes to beat the 3pm slump:
Choose a healthy snack - You may be tempted to get a boost from sweet and sugary snacks, but that’s only temporary fix before you crash again. Besides most vending machine snacks are high in calories too. Instead opt for a health snack like rice cakes, fruit, cereal, turkey slices, string cheese, greek yogurt, nut butter, whole nuts (like almonds), or veggies.
Move - Just getting up out of your chair and moving can get the blood flowing and send much needed oxygen to your brain. So, take a break and take a short 5 or 10 minute walk. You’ll find you have more energy to get through the rest of the day.Skip the caffeine - It’s easy to think that just having another cup of coffee or a caffeinated soda will give you the jolt you need, but it may actually work against you. And you may pay for that caffeine consumption later at night when you're trying to get a good night’s sleep. Choose tea or water instead. And black or green tea has just enough caffeine to keep you hydrated. Staying hydrated is an important part of raising your energy level, since dehydration can masquerade as fatigue.
