Yesterday was Cliché Day and we want to take a few of the most common cliches and turn them from hackneyed phrases that have lost their meaning into positive motivators when it comes to your health and well being.
Actions speak louder than words - When it comes to your health, taking care of yourself (as opposed to just promising to do so) is much more powerful. Saying you will address health issues or resolve to eat healthier or exercise more are just empty words unless you really put a plan into action and DO IT!
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree - Many people use this one with regards to their health by thinking that if their parents had a sickness or disease it’s inevitable they will also have it. But that’s not true. The likelihood of being predisposed is much higher, but it’s not a certainty. If you have a family history of diabetes your chances could be increased, but armed with that knowledge, you can take action and do everything in your power to help reduce your risks. This is most often a common excuse when it comes to weight. “My whole family is big” is not an excuse for you to gain weight. You may need to work harder to keep in shape or shed unwanted pounds, but using your family’s history as an excuse is really no excuse.
You can’t judge a book by its cover - We have all seen stories about marathon runners that died of heart attacks or thin people that get diabetes or people that embrace a super-healthy lifestyle only to develop lung cancer. What you present on the outside is not a perfect indicator of what is happening on the inside. That can only be determined by being vigilant about seeing a medical professional, getting your scheduled, routine checkups and not assuming anything when it comes to your health. What you see in the mirror is not always the best indicator of what is happening inside your body.
You can’t please everyone -This can be a major cause of stress. And stress takes it toll on your body. Bending over backwards to please everyone is unrealistic and unhealthy. Treating yourself well and being true to who you are will make you much happier and that translates to less worry and stress.
Ignorance is bliss - This one is especially harmful when it comes to your health. Putting your head in the sand, ignoring health issues, skipping crucial milestone tests or evaluations is not bliss. Instead it can lead to long-term problems. Not knowing the state of your health or not facing it head on is not the key to happiness, it is foolish and harmful.
There’s no time like the present -This is cliche, but it is also a fact. If you’ve been putting off getting healthy or starting a new routine, now is the time. Procrastination is not your friend. You can’t can't change the past, but you can resolve to move forward from this moment on and take care your of yourself NOW!
Better safe than sorry - You don’t want to take chances with your health and well being. If you're worried about an issue or aren’t feeling up to par, see a doctor. Do something about it. It may turn out to be nothing, but it could prevent problems down the road.
